Chapter 18

Siobhan stood in the car park of Scrabo Tower and looked back up at the tall structure. The day was now overcast, threatening with rain, but it still looked magnificent. Her mind focused on the top floor, thinking back to the first time she’d run in.

Had the hand been there? It was behind the speaker. She’d seen the speaker ever so quickly and run. The speaker had been one of those you could get in a shop. You could connect to it via Bluetooth, or maybe it had a little SD card inside, playing back the call she’d heard. She turned and kicked the tyre of her car. She’d been played. Damn well played again.

She should have seen it coming. The lack of time. The potential threat to someone. Yes, the deed had already been done, of course. The hand had been removed from whatever victim.

‘Don’t beat yourself up,’ said Kylie, behind her. She turned on the girl.

‘Don’t beat myself up? We walked right into this. We walked straight into this.’

‘You can’t blame yourself. Somebody has got it in for us at the moment. Somebody has—’

‘Kylie, I didn’t just come up the Lagan in a bubble, you know? This is what I did. I worked out in the field. This is something that should come naturally to me. I should have smelt it. I should have reacted to it straightaway.’

‘At least Simon doesn’t seem too bothered. He’s quite excited with all the police around. You’d almost think he was half enjoying this.’

‘You could say that,’ said Siobhan, ‘except he was a little perturbed when he saw the other hand. Really got him to his core by the looks of it. Where is he, anyway?’

‘He’s talking to Detective Flanagan. I think they’re going to want us to go down to the station; make the formal statements down there.’

‘Seriously, I told him everything I know. I need to get back on to it. Also, I need to see how Julian’s getting on too. I saw him call, but I didn’t answer it. Not here in the middle of this circus.’

Siobhan looked around her at the many police cars and the forensic teams that had arrived. She’d be allowed to go soon enough. After all, they didn’t believe she was a suspect. The Service certainly wouldn’t have put her down for something such as this, and with her previous record, she would be exonerated from it. After all, she’d told the police she was working on this case, but they didn’t seem too happy about that.

‘Mrs Duffy,’ said a voice from several feet away.

‘Ah, Flanagan,’ said Siobhan, ‘can I go yet?’

‘You’re going to run me through it one more time,’ said Flanagan. ‘You came up here because you got a letter.’

‘Simon Burns came to my house and produced a letter from his satchel. Said that it had been delivered to the office of the County Down Standard for me. He knows where I live because they’ve hired me to be involved in this case.
